#onebookjuly2024 - PART 10: FLIP THROUGH AND EXTRAS - TN Journal Setups and a Collaged Project
As part of the ‘Mind the Gap’ 2024 One Book July Challenge I have made this mini 10 part series showing my process in filling up the blank pages and empty spaces in my January to July Journal.
Rather than doing the original One Book July challenge (using one book and one pen throughout July) I chose the alternative theme this year because I already planned to have a go at filling up my pages before I move on with the second half of the year.
For Rhomany’s video introducing this year’s ‘Mind the Gap’ challenge theme, please look here: ua-cam.com/video/THX4WMYE6Bo/v-deo.html

    The Sarasa gel pens do come in metal bodies that can be reused. Technically you can refill the plastic bodies also but the metal ones probably feel more substantial.

    • @EmilyKariya
      @EmilyKariya 22 дні тому

      Ohhh this is true! I had a vague feeling there was a refillable version but I checked again,and wasn't too keen on the heavier pen body. But your idea of refilling the plastic bodies might work, thank you! 😊

    Well done Emily! That was such a good little series and totally calming and cute to watch. I love how everything turned out and honestly you blow me away with how many layers there are to your work, yet it all looks cohesive at the end. The box file turned out wonderfully too and what a great way to use up more of your beautiful sheets. Have a great trip to Japan and thank you for sharing x

    Washi tapes are so beautiful, I love putting them on my envelopes and around the edges of writing paper I use for letters. (Really wish letter writing would make a come back; so much nicer than email but not always practical; I get it). Your pages are looking so lovely Emily 😊

    • @EmilyKariya
      @EmilyKariya Місяць тому

      Yeah, I think there is definitely a need! It is so weird because I feel like Instagram has forced us all to be more cut off from each other than before, and places like Etsy do the same when you can't find anything original very easily. So we can't all be anywhere sharing ideas and photos and our artwork and suggestions of other people doing fun planner stuff any more. Unless it is all happening somewhere else and I don't know about it haha

    Those Neocolor II’s are awesome, I bought the tin of ten and I want to get more blues and greens; they’re so fun to use. I completely agree about Etsy and what it has become and I did see a video elsewhere that apparently they’re clamping down on the mass produced and trying to move it back toward purely hand-made goods. I wholeheartedly support giving a shout-out to other artists/small businesses; I’m going to go back and see if I can find who I’ve used before to list them here 😊

    • @EmilyKariya
      @EmilyKariya Місяць тому

      Hmmm I am sceptical about Etsy doing that because they could have done it years ago but chose to let it happen (as presumably they make a lot of money from the resellers on there). Unless they've had a huge overhaul of staff/ownership? I know they are doing lota of ads about stuff being made by 'real humans' but I'm pretty sure that's just them trying to distract from the fact that they recently decided to allow AI generated art on there maybe? Well, anyway, we will see. It is such a shame as I know a lot of artists and craftspeople struggle on there now because nobody can find them. But unless Etsy makes huge changes I don't expect to see much change any time soon. Would be good though! Also would like Instagram to change too haha! You never know!

    I used the 003 insert at the first part of the year and found that I either had to use a very wet ink or nibs that were at least a medium. I was so bummed my EF stub was not working on it!

    • @EmilyKariya
      @EmilyKariya Місяць тому

      Yeah, I feel like there is too much tooth to the paper and the finer nibs are jist too scratchy. Like the paper is dry somehow (or makes pens feel dry). Haven't tried a medium nib (the largest I have) but might do with a wetter ink and see how that works.

    Your current work has such a sweetness about it, and a very distinctive and what I think of as modern palette! So it was super interesting to see your more foundational work, thank you for sharing that. I’m so happy you kept some of your work from previous years, the ones with more positive associations for you. Everything looks incredibly detailed and I still see that theme in some pieces of your work so that’ll be super interesting to see if you retain that or re-visit it over even more time. Isn’t it funny how we get pulled into different curiosities along our journeys? I did a two year display and design course at college in Watford and I haven’t kept a single piece which I think is a shame now! I’m looking forward to sticking images from this months rewards sheet in my notebooks. I bought a ten pack of Pritt stick and it is SO much nicer to use than the US equivalent (Elmers). Anyway… also a big fan of marmalade! 😂 Thanks for a lovely video Emily x

      Oooh a display and design course. That sounds interesting! Yeah, I think when you produce soooo much stuff at some point you have to come to terms with disposing of some of it so you aren't drowning in it all haha! I have no regrets so far!! Thanks for your thoughtful comment and for watching 😊

    Love your work Emily. It is a very enjoyable family memory journal and has given me a few ideas, thankyou. I have been creating a Christmas stories junk journal including family/ friends photos, saved cards from over years, memories, collage, scrapbook paper and other saved junk. I am in Australia so the theme is often about how hot it can be here and Santa is more likely depicted on a Surf Board!!🤩

      Hi! Yes Christmas in the southern hemisphere is a little different isn't it! I did a Christmas in Mexico once and it was the strangest thing for me for it to be hot and sunny haha! I have seen quite a few people from Australia who do Christmas journals on UA-cam and I love how creative they are and it is so interesting to see the themes and choices! Loved hearing about yours too, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    Lovely to see you again. What is it about cutting, glueing and stickers that we find so relaxing? I do love your separate desk areas, do you find you still tend to be drawn to one?

    • @EmilyKariya
      @EmilyKariya 2 місяці тому

      At the moment I am using them fairly equally which is working out great. Since they have different, distinct uses it means I can choose according to what I am up to! I currently have a little pile of drawings on the one desk for me to cut out as a treat when I get a bit of time because cutting out pictures is a treat hehe 😊

    I’m so glad you have archived hard copies of your beautiful work Emily! As you were flipping through I recognized various images that I’ve got stuck in my own planners and diaries! Like you I love to place stickers; I don’t know why but I find it such a calming activity even though I make a big mess with glue 😂. Thank you for a great video, I do so love seeing creatives’ workspaces 😊

    Got the airmail sheet but was trying to find the page with the Japanese house and the bonsais (not the Ikebana page). Is it not in the shop?

      Hello! Thank you so much! Ahh no that one was a high res large image sheet I did only for my personal use (and to put in my portfolio). The images are elsewhere but just smaller, on another sheet (It has the red geisha circle stamp on it too, I think). Glad you like the airmail sheet, that was never a Patreon sheet but I thought I'd share it. It is one of my oldest pieces. Thank you!

    This was so cute! I wish I had your box setup rather than the clunky system I have which is made up of various sized containers that don't stack up. Your setup was so inspiring - hoping to do that sometime next year. :)

      Thank you! In hindsight it was worth the faff of making it, as now I have something I can pull out and use every year! Although having said that I didn't manage a Christmas journals last year in the end!!! Which is why the videos stopped. But as you say, there's always the next time!

    Love watching your process! I made a stash holder like yours about 6 years ago out of card and it’s lasted all this time. This year hubbie replaced it with a wooden one but same design. Love the fairy lights gets round yours!
